NEW YORK, USA — President Irfaan Ali recently met with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio to advance discussions on regional security and bilateral trade.
According to a statement from the Office of the President, both leaders reaffirmed the importance of the Guyana–US strategic partnership, particularly in combating narco-terrorism and other transnational crimes that threaten regional stability.

The talks also addressed broader hemispheric concerns, including the crises in Haiti and Cuba. President Ali and Secretary Rubio emphasized the need for continued collaboration on these challenges while acknowledging the United States’ role as a vital trade partner for Guyana.
The meeting highlighted progress in ongoing bilateral trade negotiations, with both sides underscoring their commitment to securing a mutually beneficial agreement. They also pledged to deepen coordination at multilateral forums to tackle shared global issues.
President Ali was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, and Director of Presidential Affairs Marcia Nadir-Sharma.
