Plans for Zohran Mamdani’s inauguration as New York City mayor have been finalized, with his transition team announcing a public street celebration leading up to the official swearing-in ceremony on January 1.
According to the mayor-elect’s team, a block party will take place along Broadway in Lower Manhattan, stretching from Liberty Street to Murray Street. The event will feature music and large screens, allowing attendees to watch the ceremony live. Members of the public who wish to attend are required to register online through Mamdani’s transition website. The ceremony will also be livestreamed, with registration required for virtual viewing.

Mamdani will be sworn in on the steps of City Hall and will be joined by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and comptroller elect Mark Levine during the ceremony.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to secure a good viewing spot. The swearing in ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist and State Assembly member won the mayoral election in November, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams initially sought reelection but withdrew from the race in late September and later endorsed Cuomo.
Adams himself was sworn in shortly after midnight in Times Square in 2022 following the New Year’s Eve ball drop.
Mamdani will become New York City’s 112th mayor following the correction of a historical counting error identified by a researcher at the Department of Records and first reported by Gothamist.
“I thought I was going to be the 111th mayor,” Mamdani said last week. “But the Department of Records confirmed I will be the 112th, and I am excited regardless.”
