While President Trump is being commended for his efforts to promote peace in the Middle East, he is simultaneously waging an unnecessary and dangerous war in the Caribbean—an area long recognized as a Zone of Peace. Since 2014, under the declaration of CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), the Caribbean has been designated as a region committed to maintaining peace, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty. It is meant to be an area where nations can grow, develop, and thrive—known for its beauty, stability, and the warmth of its people.
Now, however, that peace is being violated. The recent unprovoked military strikes by the United States in Caribbean waters are deeply troubling. The fifth such strike, conducted just two days ago and publicly celebrated by President Trump and the Secretary of Defense, has claimed six more lives—bringing the total to twenty-seven deaths in six attacks. These assaults have occurred in traditionally peaceful waters where commercial vessels have long operated freely and lawfully.

These strikes were not conducted under any due process—neither sanctioned by U.S. law nor in accordance with international law. Historically, when there is suspicion of drug trafficking or illicit transport, the U.S. Coast Guard or naval authorities have well-established procedures to intercept, board, inspect, and seize contraband. Arrests and prosecutions can then follow under international maritime law. That system works. There is no justification for sudden military aggression, for indiscriminate killing, or for actions that disrespect the sovereignty and integrity of Caribbean nations.
What is now unfolding is a blatant disregard for regional peace and international norms. Even within the United States, both Republican and Democratic voices have begun questioning the legality and morality of these operations. Democratic leaders have stated clearly that these actions violate U.S. and international law. This is not a partisan matter—it is a matter of justice, legality, and respect for life.
The Caribbean’s future as a Zone of Peace must not be placed in jeopardy by unilateral acts of aggression. We call upon the United Nations, the U.S. Congress, and the international community to intervene, to demand accountability, and to reaffirm the Caribbean’s right to peace and security. The region must not become another arena for military ambition or political posturing.
The Caribbean has worked hard to maintain its peaceful image, to build cooperation among its peoples, and to serve as a beacon of stability in an often-turbulent world. It deserves to continue on that path. The call from Carib News is clear: Let the Caribbean remain a Zone of Peace. Let diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for international law prevail—so that the region can continue to shine as a symbol of what is possible when nations choose peace over power.
