Former Miss Universe Jamaica Dr. Gabrielle Henry has shared the physical and emotional challenges of her recovery following a serious fall during the 2025 Miss Universe competition in Thailand, describing an experience that has profoundly changed her life.
In a personal account highlighted by The Root, Henry reflected on the long road to recovery after falling through an opening in the stage during the preliminary evening gown competition on November 19, 2025. The incident left her with a traumatic brain injury, an intracranial haemorrhage, facial injuries and other significant trauma.

Henry said the experience left her feeling disconnected from her own body as she struggled to regain abilities that had once come naturally. Her recovery involved relearning basic bodily functions, including breathing exercises to help rebuild her lung capacity.
The ophthalmologist described how even small improvements during rehabilitation became milestones. At times, she was unable to bathe herself and depended on medical staff for assistance, leaving her feeling vulnerable as she adjusted to the uncertainty surrounding her recovery.
In the months since the accident, Henry has also endured severe headaches and back pain, along with sleepless nights. She has spoken about the importance of allowing herself time to heal rather than expecting her body to return immediately to its previous condition.
The incident interrupted both her medical career and her pageant journey. Henry missed the Miss Universe finale and was unable to carry out some of the duties she had expected to fulfil as Jamaica’s representative. She later returned to the Miss Universe Jamaica stage in August 2026 to crown her successor, describing the appearance as an opportunity to reclaim part of an experience she had lost.
Despite the setbacks, Henry said she continues to work towards resuming her career, although she has had to adjust her schedule and remain closely connected to her healthcare providers.
Her recovery has also prompted reflection on the role of patience, personal growth and accepting support from others. Henry said the experience taught her to extend grace to herself and recognise that healing does not follow a fixed timeline.
In September 2026, Henry filed a lawsuit against the Miss Universe Organization and related entities, alleging negligence and unsafe stage conditions contributed to the fall. The claims are allegations in an ongoing legal matter and have not been established as findings of a court.
Henry has said she was following the instructions and choreography provided for the stage walk when the incident occurred. The Miss Universe Organization has stated that the safety and well-being of contestants are priorities, while disputing the suggestion that it was responsible for the event’s stage and on-site safety arrangements.
Although Henry’s recovery remains ongoing, she has expressed a determination to continue healing and move forward with her medical career. Her account highlights the lasting physical and emotional consequences that can follow a serious injury, even after the immediate medical emergency has passed.
