New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced that the city will double the maximum amount available through its artist grant programme, increasing awards from $5,000 to $10,000 in a move aimed at helping creative professionals manage rising living and production costs.
The announcement, made on October 2 alongside Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su and Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya Vij, marks the first increase in the grant ceiling in nearly two decades.

The grants are distributed through local arts organisations in each of the cityās five boroughs and support individual artists, collectives and small nonprofit organisations. Eligible creative disciplines include filmmaking, dance, writing, painting and other artistic practices.
Mamdani said artists face the same financial pressures as other New Yorkers, including rising housing, grocery and childcare costs, while the funding available to support their work has remained unchanged for years.
āDoubling these grants is a critical step towards making sure that the painters, musicians, filmmakers, and other artists who bring life to this city can afford to call it home,ā the mayor said.
Vij said the increase followed discussions with working artists across the city about the challenges of maintaining their creative practices while meeting everyday expenses. She described the expanded funding and additional resources as an initial step toward providing more meaningful support to the cityās arts community.
Applications are being handled by borough-based arts organisations, with deadlines varying by location. The Brooklyn Arts Councilās deadline was October 11, while applications for the Bronx are due October 30. Manhattanās Lower Manhattan Cultural Council has a November 12 deadline, and the New York Foundation for the Arts, which administers the Queens Arts Fund, has a November 17 deadline. Staten Islandās application cycle is expected to open in November.
The city is also expanding assistance through its Materials for the Arts programme, which collects donated supplies for nonprofit organisations, public schools and city agencies with cultural programming. Under the new initiative, artists who receive grants through participating borough arts councils can access donated materials during dedicated monthly shopping days.
The programme collects approximately four million pounds of donated materials annually, giving eligible recipients access to supplies that can help reduce the cost of producing creative work.
The grant increase forms part of the Mamdani administrationās broader effort to support the arts and cultural sector. City officials say the additional funding is intended to help artists continue working and living in New York, where rising expenses have made it increasingly difficult for many creative professionals to sustain their careers.
