Leon A. Gordon, O.D., JP

Leon Anthony Gordon, O.D., JP, a respected Jamaican community stalwart whose life was defined by service, leadership and a commitment to national development, died on September 9, 2026, at the age of 82.

His passing has brought profound sadness to his family, colleagues, friends and the many communities he served. At the same time, his loved ones give thanks for a life dedicated to improving the lives of others and contributing to Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
Gordon will be remembered for his distinguished service in governance and leadership, education, business, community development and national development. Throughout his life, he earned the respect of colleagues, friends and countless individuals whose lives he positively influenced.
Among the many positions he held were Chairman of the Board of North Eastern Parks & Markets (NEPM), Chairman of the North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA) and Chairman of the St. Ann Development Company/Urban Development Corporation (SADCO/UDC).
His contribution to education included service with Moneague College and the Mico CARE Centre in St. Ann’s Bay, as well as Vice Chairman of Ocho Rios High School and St. John’s Preparatory School. He also served as Acting Principal of Marcus Garvey Technical High School and was the inaugural Principal of Wesley College.
Gordon was a founding member and inaugural Treasurer of the St. Ann Justices of the Peace Association, a Director of National Hotels & Properties, and a leader in the business community. He also served as President of the Jaycees of Jamaica and Vice President/Senator of West Indies Jaycees.
His commitment to service extended to the church, where he served as a Lay Preacher and Rector’s Warden at St. John’s Anglican Church in Ocho Rios.
While his many titles reflected the breadth of his service, Gordon’s enduring legacy is found in the people and institutions he touched. His life was marked by integrity, wisdom, generosity and a steadfast commitment to serving others.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, L. Joyce Gordon; daughter, Diahann Gordon Harrison; son-in-law, Dirk Harrison; grandchildren Dirk, Liam, Milan and Bree Harrison; as well as relatives, friends and a wide circle of colleagues and community members.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on October 24, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, Ocho Rios, St. Ann.
Leon Anthony Gordon leaves behind a legacy of purpose, service, love and leadership that will continue through the people, institutions and communities he served.
