Nearly five decades after its original release, Bob Marley and The Wailers’ “Waiting In Vain” has earned Platinum certification in the United Kingdom, adding another posthumous milestone to the reggae icon’s enduring catalogue.
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certified the 1977 single Platinum on September 25, 2026, after it surpassed 600,000 UK units, combining sales and streaming equivalents.

Written by Marley, “Waiting In Vain” first appeared on Exodus, the landmark 1977 album by Marley and The Wailers. Released as a single in the UK that year, it entered the Official Singles Chart on September 10 and peaked at No. 27during a six-week chart run. A 1984 reissue later reached No. 31.
The song is one of Marley’s more intimate recordings, exploring romantic longing and uncertainty rather than the overtly political themes associated with much of his work. Its inclusion on the 1984 compilation Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and The Wailers further helped cement its place in his internationally celebrated catalogue.
The new certification adds to Marley and The Wailers’ UK success, with “Three Little Birds” certified triple Platinum, while “Is This Love” and “Could You Be Loved” have reached double Platinum. “No Woman, No Cry,” “Jamming,” “One Love” and “Buffalo Soldier” have also achieved Platinum status.
“Waiting In Vain” has continued to reach new audiences through contemporary interpretations. In 2023, Island Records UK and the Marley family released a new version featuring Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage, introducing the classic to another generation.
The Platinum certification nearly 50 years after its debut underscores the continuing commercial reach of Marley’s music and the ability of his recordings to find new audiences long after his death.
