Jamaican sprint icon Usain Bolt has been unveiled as the Ultimate Legend for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, set for September 11–13, 2026, in Budapest.
The event, billed as a game-changer for the sport, will bring together the world’s top-ranked athletes in a season-ending showdown to determine the very best across track and field. For Bolt, whose electrifying career yielded eight Olympic gold medals, 19 senior global titles, and multiple world records, the role marks his first formal partnership with World Athletics since retirement.

“The Ultimate Championship is about the best of the best facing off — no excuses, big personalities, big money, true bragging rights,” Bolt said. “I would have loved to compete in this kind of box-office championship. I’m honoured to take on the role of Ultimate Legend and help grow a sport that remains such a huge part of my life.”
The announcement comes after world pole vault record-holder Mondo Duplantis was named the first Ultimate Star last month. As Ultimate Legend, Bolt will use his global influence to promote the championship and inspire fans ahead of its launch.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe hailed the appointment as fitting: “Usain transcends athletics. He continues to elevate the sport and inspire athletes worldwide. As we work to innovate and showcase new stars, we must also honour the trailblazers who captured imaginations and shaped the sport. Bolt is exactly that.”
The championship will feature Olympic and world champions, Diamond League winners, and the season’s best performers competing in three days of high-intensity action at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre. Twenty-six athletes are already qualified as reigning Olympic champions, with more set to join following the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 2025 — where Bolt will make a guest appearance to mark the “one year to go” milestone.
Hungary’s Secretary of State for Sports, Dr. Ádám Schmidt, welcomed Bolt’s involvement: “His presence ensures inspiration not only on the track but beyond it. He embodies excellence and can motivate our young people to embrace sport, just as the 2023 World Championships did.”
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship aims to ensure that every athletics season culminates in a major global event with real significance for athletes, fans, broadcasters, and the sport’s future.
