Tennis legend Serena Williams is officially returning to competitive tennis after nearly four years away from the sport, recently confirming that she will compete in the womenās doubles event at the prestigious Queen’s Club later this month.
The announcement marks a remarkable comeback for the 44-year-old American icon, whose last competitive appearance came at the 2022 U.S. Open, where she exited in the third round. Since then, Williams has largely focused on family life and business ventures while leaving open the possibility of a future return.

Speculation surrounding a comeback intensified late last year after it was revealed that Williams had re-entered professional tennisā anti-doping program, a mandatory requirement for players seeking to compete on the tour. At the time, however, she dismissed reports of an imminent return, joking on social media that she was ānot coming back.ā
On Monday, Williams put an end to the uncertainty.
Sharing a short video on social media, she appeared on court dressed in an all-white Nike tennis outfit while her phone buzzed continuously with incoming notifications. Accompanying the post was a simple message: āGood news travels fast.ā
Tournament organizers later confirmed that Williams had accepted a wild-card entry into the womenās doubles competition at Queenās Club, where she is expected to partner with rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko.
āQueenās Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,ā Williams said in a statement.
āGrass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and Iām excited to be back competing on one of the sportās most iconic stages.ā
The tournament, which begins June 8, serves as an important warm-up event ahead of Wimbledon, a venue where Williams enjoyed some of the greatest triumphs of her storied career. She captured seven Wimbledon singles titles and established herself as one of the most dominant grass-court players in tennis history.
Laura Robson, tournament director of the LTAās HSBC Championships, welcomed Williamsā return, describing it as a significant moment for the sport.
āSerena Williams is one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen, and weāre delighted that she will be making her return to tennis at the LTAās HSBC Championships,ā Robson said.
āWomenās tennis made a historic return to Queenās Club last year, and now we have an icon of the game stepping back onto the court.ā
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, Williams amassed 23 Grand Slam singles titles during her illustrious career, the most by any woman in the Open Era and second only to Margaret Court on the all-time list with 24 major singles championships.
When she stepped away from competition in 2022, Williams notably avoided using the term āretirement,ā instead describing the transition as an āevolutionā away from professional tennis.
That choice now appears especially fitting.
With her return to competition confirmed, one of the most celebrated athletes of the modern era is preparing to write the latest chapter in a career that has already transformed the sport and inspired generations around the world.
I didn’t expect to see Serena back on the court. Do you think she’s ready to compete at a high level again?
