The remarkable life story of Lolo Betty Patricia Mgbenwelu, an 83-year-old Jamaican-born matriarch whose journey has traversed continents, cultures, and one of Africa’s most devastating conflicts, was celebrated at the official launch of her autobiography, Echoes of Survival, at the prestigious Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The memoir offers a deeply personal account of a life shaped by extraordinary experiences, from her childhood in Kingston, Jamaica, to her relocation to Nigeria in the early 1960s following her marriage, and her harrowing experiences during the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War. Through the lens of a Caribbean-born woman raising a family far from home, the book explores themes of faith, perseverance, identity, and survival.

The launch drew an impressive audience of diplomats, political leaders, business figures, and members of the Jamaican and Nigerian communities, underscoring the significance of a story that bridges two nations and generations.
Delivering remarks as special guest of honor, Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lincoln C. Downer, hailed Lolo Patricia as “one of Jamaica’s finest daughters” and a distinguished representative of the island nation abroad.
Describing Echoes of Survival as “authentic, audacious, and inspirational,” High Commissioner Downer said the memoir possesses all the qualities of a bestseller. He noted that the author’s survival of the Kendal train crash, Jamaica’s deadliest railway disaster, was among the many remarkable chapters of a life that appeared destined for a greater purpose.
He further commended her decision to document her experiences, describing the memoir as an important historical record and a gift to future generations seeking to understand the complexities of migration, family, and resilience.
Among the distinguished guests attending the launch were Ogun State First Lady Dr. Bamidele Abiodun; former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke; Ambassador Dr. Maureen Tamuno, former Nigerian High Commissioner to Jamaica; Dr. Christopher Kolade, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom; and Aima Lijadu, Honorary Consul of Jamaica in Lagos. Media executive and filmmaker Ego Boyo served as chief launcher of the publication.
A particularly emotional tribute came from Chief Barr. Peter Chukwuemeka Mgbenwelu, one of Imo State’s most respected legal practitioners and husband of the author for 64 years. Describing his wife as “one of God’s greatest blessings,” he encouraged families, especially women and mothers, to read the book and draw inspiration from its lessons on courage, endurance, and unwavering faith.
Born Betty Patricia Bethel Monica Bingham in Kingston in August 1943, Lolo Patricia met her future husband while living in London in 1962. What began as a cross-cultural romance evolved into a lifelong partnership and a six-decade journey in Nigeria, where she built both a family and a successful professional career.
A graduate of London Guildhall University, she held senior roles at Cadbury Nigeria Plc and Golden Guinea Breweries Ltd., earning multiple professional accolades throughout her career. She later founded Genika Travel and Tours Ltd. and served as president of the Nigerwives Owerri Chapter. Today, she is the proud mother of six children, grandmother of 18, and great-grandmother of three.
In Echoes of Survival, readers are taken through her formative years in Jamaica, her miraculous survival of the Kendal train disaster, her transition into Nigerian society, and the immense challenges of navigating the Biafran War as a foreign-born civilian mother. At its core, the memoir is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the enduring power of hope in the face of adversity.
More than a personal narrative, Echoes of Survival serves as a bridge between Jamaica and Nigeria, illuminating the shared human experiences that transcend geography and culture. It is a story of survival against the odds and a celebration of a life dedicated to family, service, and faith.
The memoir is available through major online book retailers and selected bookstores.
