New York City parents will soon have a new option for affordable evening childcare as the city’s Parks Department launches “Parents’ Night Out,” a supervised recreation programme that allows caregivers to enjoy a few hours off while their children participate in fun, structured activities.
The initiative, which begins this summer at select recreation centres across the five boroughs, is open to children ages 6 to 13. During the four-hour sessions, participants will enjoy games, sports, arts and crafts, movies and other age-appropriate activities under the supervision of trained NYC Parks staff. Officials say the programme is designed to provide a safe environment where children can socialize, stay active and develop new skills outside the classroom.

The new offering is part of the Adams administration’s broader effort to expand affordable recreational opportunities for working families while making greater use of the city’s extensive network of recreation centres. With childcare costs continuing to rise across New York City, officials believe the programme will provide parents with a convenient and budget-friendly option for an occasional evening out.
Parents will be required to register their children in advance, as spaces will be limited to ensure appropriate staff-to-child ratios. Organizers say the events will be held at participating recreation centres in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island throughout the year, with additional sessions expected if demand remains high.
City leaders hope the programme will not only offer much-needed respite for parents but also encourage greater community engagement through the Parks Department’s expanding lineup of youth and family programming. If successful, “Parents’ Night Out” could become a regular feature across New York City’s recreation system, providing families with another accessible resource for safe, enriching after-hours activities.
