A wave of deadly violence swept through the central town of Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite early Sunday, as heavily armed gang members clashed with a local vigilante group, intensifying Haiti’s deepening security crisis.
Officials confirmed that the нападение was carried out by the notorious Gran Grif gang, which targeted the Jean-Denis community, leaving bodies strewn across the streets and homes set ablaze. Graphic videos circulating online showed widespread destruction and civilians fleeing in panic.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of fatalities.
The latest bloodshed underscores the worsening instability in Haiti, where gang violence has surged dramatically since the 2021 assassination of former president Jovenel Moïse. The power vacuum left by his killing has fueled the expansion of armed groups across the country.
In response to the growing insecurity, vigilante movements began emerging around 2023, aiming to push back against gang control. However, their rise has further complicated the conflict, often involving brutal reprisals against suspected gang members.
Reports indicate that some vigilante groups have carried out extreme acts of violence, including mutilation and public executions, contributing to an escalating cycle of retaliation.
Meanwhile, Gran Grif continues to dominate parts of the Artibonite region, where it has been accused by the United Nations of committing widespread atrocities. The group is believed to be responsible for a significant portion of civilian deaths in the area, as well as mass displacement, sexual violence, and other human rights abuses.
The gang was also designated a foreign terrorist organization by the United States last year, reflecting growing international concern over Haiti’s deteriorating security situation.
Despite ongoing international efforts to stabilize the country, violence persists, leaving communities trapped between armed gangs and retaliatory vigilante forces, with little sign of immediate relief.
