Chad will deploy 1,500 to Haiti as part of a United Nations-backed security mission aimed at curbing escalating gang violence, according to an official communication from President Mahamat Déby Itno.
In a letter read before lawmakers on Monday, Déby confirmed that two battalions of 750 troops each will be dispatched beginning this month for a one-year deployment, following a request from the United Nations.

“A contingent of 400 men has already been sent to Haiti as part of this mission that honors Chad and its defense and security forces,” the president stated.
Expanded UN-Backed Force
The deployment comes amid efforts to strengthen the multinational security presence in Haiti. In 2025, the UN Security Council approved the expansion of the Kenya-led mission, now known as the Gang Suppression Force, to 5,500 personnel, with an enhanced mandate allowing for the arrest of suspected gang members.
The original mission, launched in 2023 and led by Kenyan police, was initially designed to include 2,500 personnel but faced significant challenges due to limited funding and staffing.
Worsening Security Crisis
Haiti continues to grapple with one of the most severe security crises in the Western Hemisphere, with armed groups controlling up to 90% of Port-au-Prince and expanding their reach into central regions.
The situation has deteriorated sharply since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, which plunged the country into prolonged instability.
Recent violence underscores the urgency of international intervention. Human rights groups reported that at least 30 people were killed and dozens remain missing following a renewed attack by the Gran Grif gang in the town of Petite-Rivière de l’Artibonite last month.
International Response
Chad’s contribution signals growing international support for stabilizing Haiti, as the UN and partner nations attempt to restore order and strengthen state authority.
With the expanded force expected to scale up operations in the coming months, attention now turns to whether the reinforced mission can effectively contain gang influence and create conditions for long-term stability in the crisis-hit nation.
