Guyana has emerged as one of the Caribbean and South Americaās fastest-growing tourism destinations, closing 2025 with its strongest tourism performance on record and signaling a new phase of structured growth for the sector.
According to the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), visitor arrivals increased by 24 percent between January and October 2025, with a total of 371,446 travelers entering the country during that period ā the highest number ever recorded. The figures reflect growing international interest in Guyanaās nature-based, cultural, and community tourism offerings.

The United States remained Guyanaās largest source market, accounting for 40 percent of arrivals. Caribbean visitors followed at 33 percent, while Canada and Latin America each contributed seven percent. Europe represented six percent of total arrivals, highlighting the destinationās expanding reach across diverse global markets.
Digital Transformation and Market Access
Beyond record visitor numbers, 2025 marked a year of significant structural advancement for the tourism sector. A major milestone was the launch of the Destination Booking Engine, a digital platform designed to modernize how travelers discover and book tourism experiences in Guyana.
The GTA said the platform improves visibility for local tour operators and allows international travelers to directly access authentic experiences across the country. The initiative is part of a broader push toward digitization, aimed at connecting Guyanaās remote attractions to global markets more efficiently.
Strengthening Rural and Agricultural Tourism
Another key development was the introduction of Guyanaās Agri-Tourism Policy, created in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and supported by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
The policy integrates farm-based and agricultural experiences into the national tourism product, particularly benefiting rural and hinterland communities. It is expected to generate employment opportunities, especially for women and youth, while strengthening local food systems and reducing reliance on imports.
By linking agriculture and tourism, the initiative promotes sustainability while offering visitors a deeper understanding of Guyanese culture, traditions, and livelihoods.
Ambitious Targets for 2026
Looking ahead, the Guyana Tourism Authority has outlined an ambitious agenda for 2026, with a focus on quality assurance, workforce development, and product expansion.
The GTA plans to license 300 tourism businesses during the year, supported by the creation of a new Business Development Unit to streamline approvals and enforce industry standards. Six new tourism products are scheduled for launch, while existing offerings will be upgraded to enhance visitor satisfaction and overall quality.
Training and professional development remain central to the strategy. Approximately 2,800 individuals across the sector are expected to receive training in areas such as customer service, tour guiding, first aid, culinary arts, social media marketing, and green events management.
Expanding Global Promotion
Guyanaās international marketing efforts will also intensify in 2026. The GTA plans to participate in 22 international trade shows and conduct multi-market advertising campaigns targeting North America, Europe, and diaspora communities.
Nine familiarisation (FAM) trips are planned to bring international travel professionals and media to Guyana, while more than 100 local events ā including four major quarterly signature festivals ā will receive support to strengthen domestic tourism and cultural promotion.
Strategic brand partnerships are also being pursued to further establish āDestination Guyanaā as a recognized global tourism brand.
A Maturing Tourism Sector
Officials say Guyanaās tourism sector is transitioning from an emerging destination to a more mature and structured industry, supported by improved standards, stronger systems, and long-term planning.
Government investment in infrastructure, training, and policy development continues to underpin the sectorās growth, positioning Guyana as a leading destination for nature-based and cultural tourism.
With its vast rainforests, rivers, biodiversity, and rich heritage, Guyana is steadily building a tourism model rooted in sustainability, community participation, and national pride ā as global travelers increasingly turn their attention to the country.
