Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has secured the top spot in the Caribbean for overall passenger experience and satisfaction, marking a major milestone in Guyana’s aviation sector and its growing global profile.
The ranking, based on the Q1 2026 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey conducted by the Airports Council International, also places CJIA second among 43 airports across the wider Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, just behind a leading Mexican hub.

Widely regarded as the aviation industry’s gold standard for benchmarking service quality, the ASQ programme evaluates passenger feedback in real time across more than 50 performance indicators, including check-in efficiency, security processing, and terminal cleanliness.
Minister of Public Works Deodat Indar hailed the achievement as a testament to strategic leadership and sustained investment, commending CJIA’s management and staff for their role in delivering world-class service.
“This accomplishment reflects deliberate policy direction and a commitment to efficiency at every level,” Indar said, pointing to the vision of President Irfaan Ali in transforming public sector operations.
He emphasized that CJIA’s performance is particularly noteworthy given its status as a state-operated airport competing against larger privately managed and public-private partnership facilities across the region.
Modernisation Driving Performance
Officials attribute the airport’s rise to a combination of digital innovation and infrastructure expansion. The rollout of electronic gates (e-gates), integrated with Guyana’s national identification system, has significantly improved passenger flow, reducing wait times at immigration.
At the same time, construction is underway on a new state-of-the-art terminal designed to enhance passenger comfort and accommodate the country’s rapidly increasing international traffic.
Expanding Global Reach
CJIA’s recognition comes amid a surge in global interest in Guyana, fueled by strong economic growth. The number of airlines operating at the airport has more than tripled, from five to 16, unlocking new connections to destinations across North America, South America, and Europe.
Regional Aviation Leader
The latest ASQ results solidify CJIA’s emergence as a leading aviation hub in the Caribbean, underscoring Guyana’s transition from a regional participant to a competitive force in international air travel.
With continued investment and a focus on efficiency and passenger experience, officials say the airport is well-positioned to support the country’s long-term development and expanding role in global connectivity.
