It was some 47 years ago that Dominica emerged from British rule, and since then the nation has built one of the Caribbean’s most vibrant and culturally rich commemorations of nationhood. Each year, Dominica hosts a full Independence Season, a month-long celebration that embraces its heritage, honors its history, and expresses the spirit of its people. The festivities include a National Day Parade and culminate in the World Creole Music Festival—one of the world’s most unique musical celebrations, showcasing Creole culture, artistic excellence, and the island’s journey from colonial rule to self-determination.
Known globally as the Nature Island, Dominica is a country of abundant rivers, rich landscapes, and remarkable biodiversity. In its early economic history, bananas were the mainstay of its exports, with Britain as its primary market. When that market declined, Dominica made a conscious and wise decision: to pivot toward a new development model built on eco-tourism, environmental stewardship, and renewable energy, aligning national identity with natural beauty.

Since then, this small but determined nation has expanded beyond tourism. Dominica established a respected Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program—one of the most trusted and stable in the region—and fostered a climate that encourages foreign direct investment. The country’s business environment is now regarded internationally as transparent, forward-thinking, and development-focused.
This year’s independence theme, “Progress and Purpose,” speaks directly to the Dominican experience. It reflects a national drive for advancement—progress for its people—guided by a clear sense of purpose and direction. Purpose, in Dominica’s case, is deeply connected to a culture of perseverance. The nation has faced major natural disasters and external economic shocks, yet each challenge has strengthened its collective resolve. Stability, resilience, and an unwavering determination to rebuild have become hallmarks of the Dominican spirit.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, in his Independence message, reminded the nation that the true meaning of independence is not only the right to govern ourselves, but the maturity to sustain and demonstrate that democracy strengthens unity—one people under one flag. It is a message that resonates deeply across the region.
As Dominica continues to play a meaningful role in regional affairs and to make its mark on the international stage—despite its small size, but because of its extraordinary will—Carib News proudly salutes the nation.
