U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States may become involved in addressing the growing crisis in Cuba, raising the possibility of what he described as a “friendly takeover.”
Speaking during a news conference in Doral, Trump said the Cuban government is facing severe economic and humanitarian challenges and indicated that Marco Rubio is currently handling the situation.

“He’s dealing with it and it may be a friendly takeover, it may not be a friendly takeover,” Trump told reporters. “Wouldn’t really matter because they’re really down to…as they say, fumes. They have no energy, they have no money.”
Reports of Possible Contacts
While Trump’s remarks have fueled speculation about potential U.S. involvement in the island’s political future, Cuban authorities say there are no formal negotiations underway with Washington.
However, officials in Havana have not completely dismissed reports that American representatives may have engaged in informal conversations with Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, a figure sometimes mentioned in discussions about Cuba’s political succession.
The individual is the grandson of former Cuban leader Raul Castro, who succeeded his brother Fidel Castro in governing the country following decades of socialist rule.
Longstanding Tensions and Exile Politics
For decades, relations between the United States and Cuba have been marked by political hostility, economic sanctions, and ideological conflict dating back to the Cuban Revolution.
Cuban exile communities, particularly those concentrated in Miami, have long advocated for the removal of the Cuban government. Over the years, some exile groups have openly supported efforts aimed at ending the political system established after the revolution.
Trump’s comments come as Cuba continues to grapple with deep economic strain, energy shortages, and declining resources, conditions that have intensified pressure on the island’s leadership and fueled speculation about potential political shifts.
Despite the remarks from Washington, Cuban officials maintain that there are no active negotiations with the United States regarding any form of political transition.
