Kingston, Jamaica – The launch of Emirates Airlines’ new Dubai-Frankfurt-Montego Bay service has been hailed as a “transformative milestone” for Jamaica’s tourism and economy by Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett. The weekly flight, set to begin in April, marks the first-ever direct air link between Jamaica and the Middle East.
A Strategic Aviation Partnership
Emirates has secured regulatory approval for the route, which will operate with Condor Flugdienst handling the Frankfurt-Montego Bay segment under a codeshare agreement. Bartlett emphasized the flight’s significance, stating, “The commencement of this flight in April is a signatory achievement and it makes the point that Jamaica continues to expand its marketing footprints across the global space.”

Beyond Tourism: Economic Opportunities
“This indeed is a major mega achievement for Jamaica’s tourism,” he stated. The minister highlighted the route’s potential to unlock regional benefits:
- Caribbean Hub: Positions Jamaica as a gateway for multi-destination travel
- Trade Expansion: Opens Middle Eastern markets for Jamaican exports (agriculture, manufacturing)
- Cultural Exchange: Boosts opportunities for entertainers and creatives
Years in the Making
The deal culminates years of negotiations, beginning with Bartlett’s 2021 meeting with Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum. “It began with the wider concept of opening the markets of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) area and of course India through the Dubai gateway,” he said.
“As early as 2021, I met with the chairman of Emirates, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and his team, along with my team, and we started working with the NATA (North Atlantic Tourism Association) and other travel partners in the area to build out an arrangement that would allow for Emirates to fly to Jamaica as the opening up of the Caribbean link with the richest market of the world today,” he added.
Emirates’ arrival signals Jamaica’s rising profile as a key player in global tourism and trade. With April’s launch, the island is poised to welcome not just visitors, but a wave of new economic possibilities.
This move matters because Jamaica becomes the first Caribbean nation with direct Middle East flights, giving it a competitive edge over other island nations. Secondly, it’s great for tourism growth, tapping into high-spending Middle Eastern travelers, and lastly, increases global connectivity, linking Jamaica to Emirates’ 150+ destinations.
