The United States has updated its travel advisories for St. Lucia and the Turks and Caicos Islands, urging American travelers to exercise increased caution when visiting the popular Caribbean destinations because of concerns about crime.
The U.S. Department of State raised both countries to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, citing incidents of violent crime, including armed robberies, burglaries and sexual assaults. While the advisory does not discourage travel, it encourages U.S. citizens to remain vigilant, avoid isolated areas, safeguard valuables and follow the guidance of local authorities. The updated advisories form part of the State Department’s routine review of global travel conditions.

For St. Lucia, U.S. officials noted that most visits remain trouble-free but advised travelers to stay alert, particularly after dark and in areas where criminal activity has been reported. Visitors were also encouraged to avoid displaying signs of wealth and to monitor local media for safety updates during their stay.
The advisory for the Turks and Caicos Islands similarly warns that crime can occur throughout the territory, although tourist areas are generally well-patrolled. In addition to personal safety precautions, U.S. authorities reminded travelers that the territory strictly enforces its firearms and ammunition laws. Even inadvertently carrying a single bullet into the country can result in arrest, detention, and significant legal penalties.
Despite the advisory changes, both destinations continue to welcome thousands of international visitors each year and remain among the Caribbean’s leading tourism markets. Tourism officials across the region have consistently emphasized their commitment to visitor safety through enhanced policing, community partnerships and investments in security infrastructure.
