On October 20, the world-famous Cocoa Research Centre (CRC) of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus launched its unique chocolates onto the Barbados market, marking the beginning of a sweet adventure. The CRC made its debut in the Barbadian market with this “soft launch,” which took place in conjunction with the graduation festivities. Setting a new standard for CRC’s regional expansion in the direction of increasing consumer demand for high-quality, locally produced chocolate products, the launch was presided over by Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the St. Augustine Campus, Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Clive Landis, were also present.
During a noteworthy gathering at the Cave Hill Bookstore, Professor Antoine facilitated conversations about the potential of CRC’s chocolates in Barbados with Mr. James “Jimmy” Clarke, President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), and Beverly Smith-Hinkson, Manager of the UWI Bookshop. The most extensive gene bank is located in Trinidad, the birthplace of the highly sought-after “Trinitario” cocoa, a hybrid of two different chocolate varieties. On October 27 and 28, local chocolatiers and craftsmen in Trinidad held a two-day expo where they showcased a variety of beverages, gourmet goods made with cocoa acquired locally, and a stunning exhibition of art and craft inspired by cocoa.

The subject of this year’s exhibition, “Experience the Triple Helix,” emphasized the cooperation between the public and private sectors as well as academia in promoting industry progress. The launch of CRC chocolates in the Barbados market was a component of the initiative to highlight the organization’s dedication to the wider area. Fascinatingly, the chocolate-tasting event in Barbados attracted both BCCI members and passionate students. It was a highlight. The UWI bookstore on the Cave Hill Campus and a few other carefully chosen locations are now selling the CRC’s exclusive 50g chocolate bars, which retail for BD$17.86 (TT$60.00). This allows a wider audience to purchase and sample the region’s exquisite chocolate craftsmanship.
The magnitude and involvement of the Cocoa Research Centre’s (CRC) soft launch of chocolates surpassed expectations, setting a new standard for innovation, sustainability, and industry cooperation. The UWI Cave Hill Bookshop started selling CRC’s chocolates after receiving an incredibly good reaction, and they had to seek more supply to keep up with the demand that was quickly rising. Additionally, the BCCI’s willingness in working together suggests that CRC’s chocolates have a bright future in Barbados.
