Following the revelation last week by officials that the tap water in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, contains lead and copper and should not be consumed, the governor of the US Virgin Islands stated on November 1, 2023, that he has proclaimed a state of emergency.
Governor Albert Bryan recently issued the proclamation, allowing the US territory to request federal assistance while also freeing up much-needed resources and streamlining disaster response.

In addition, the government put a price freeze on other goods and bottled water while regional and federal officials kept testing and monitoring the St. Croix water supply.
On the island home to more than 50,600 inhabitants, allegations of reddish-brown water prompted the start of the investigation in late September.
According to officials, showering and cleaning with water is safe, but it shouldn’t be consumed or used for cooking.
