In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, the most devastating storm to strike Jamaica recently, this letter from former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, serves as both a testimony and a plea. It offers an unvarnished account of the unprecedented destruction faced by the people of Eastern Westmoreland, where entire communities have been uprooted, lives have been lost, and the landscape itself has been stripped bare. Written by a leader whose life’s work has been intertwined with the very districts now in ruin, the letter reflects deep personal grief and an urgent call for support. It underscores not only the scale of the catastrophe, but also the commitment to ensuring that every contribution is used transparently and equitably to help families begin the long road to recovery.
With a wind force of 185 mph and gusts of 201 mph, the Hurricane of the century, Melissa, made landfall at New Hope in Eastern Westmoreland and with its evil Eye traversed the entire Constituency. As it pounded all that fell within its path, nothing could withstand its fury through the hills and villages where our industrious farmers have toiled for ages. In its wake, 26 of our humble citizens perished. More than 2000 family homes no longer have a roof. The trees have no leaves and agricultural crops were totally destroyed.

The hilly terrain still makes a number of districts inaccessible, and it will take a considerable time before water, electricity and wire contact can be restored. Historic churches, schools, health centers, public offices and police stations have been demolished and shattered.
I spent my entire career in representative politics in that Constituency and adjoining ones in St. James, St. Elizabeth and Hanover to which my extended family belongs. This tragic catastrophe fills me with grief and utmost concern.
Rest assured that your contribution and whatever you can assist in obtaining will be applied equitably to fulfil deserving needs and with due accountability. The indication of your response to this plea would enable our acknowledgement and vigilant attention.
Yours truly,
P.J. Patterson, Constituency Chairman (1992-2006), Eastern Westmoreland
