In the first week of the new year, there have been fifteen murders. This is more than twice as many murders than occurred in the nation during the same time frame in 2023. The toll was seven in the same period last year.
There were six killings in Tunapuna, Belmont, Longdenville, Mt. Lambert, Port of Spain, and Aranjuez between the night of January 06, 2024, and in the afternoon the day after.

In Mount Lambert, the shooters killed their target with a shotgun, using a vehicle that had been seized from the murder victim in Aranjuez.
Selwyn “Woodsy” Pierre, Afiba “Fiba” Moraldo, Vickram “Vic” Ramlal, Adrian Stratum, Akeil Archer, and Shakell George have been identified as the victims.
Yesterday afternoon, neighbors discovered Pierre, a Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (PATT) employee, in his bathroom at his Evelyn Trace, Aranjuez, house.
Locals noticed that his silver Mazda 323 automobile was missing and that his residence had been broken into and robbed.
Pierre, 50, had many stab wounds to his torso when he was discovered with his wrists bound.
Even as police were wrapping up their investigation and the Express was in the neighborhood, residents saw a video on social media that claimed Pierre’s vehicle had been involved in Moraldo’s slaying.
The Express was informed by the officers that Pierre’s car was the one that was taken from him following his death.
The locals talked about the murder, but none of them wanted to be identified since they thought locals could have been involved in the heist and killing.
According to their description, Pierre was a reclusive man who loved to take care of his car.
They described Pierre as a man who kept to himself and whose passion was taking care of his car.
According to them, Pierre lived alone since his only son passed away in a car accident years ago.
“What this man did to anybody? It had to be someone who was marking him and that car all the time,” proposed a resident.
Residents who knew Pierre well remembered that he was recently at a nearby tavern on the 6th.
According to them, they had suspicions that his killers had either followed him home or went with him and that they tried to rob him when Pierre unlocked his big steel front gate.
“Knowing the kind of man that he was, he would have put up a fight and that is why they probably killed him. He would not allow anyone to rob him just like that,” a resident noted.
Despite not being linked to the victim, the guy who discovered Pierre’s body claimed to see him as his “brother.”
“I saw the door open and the house ransacked. His car was not there either, so, I went to the port to see if he went to work but they said he was not there. So I came back up the road and went inside the house to look for him and that is when I took a rag and opened the bathroom door and found his body,” he noted.
The residents said that despite Pierre’s door being open in the morning, they did not become suspicious of him until about midday.
Pierre’s death is suspected to have occurred either on Saturday night or early yesterday morning.
Authorities disclosed details of Moraldo’s murder even before Pierre’s body was discovered.
It was reported that the murder occurred about 10.30 a.m. According to detectives, Moraldo was standing beside the road when Pierre’s Mazda 323 approached. After chasing after Moraldo with their powerful guns, two of the car’s occupants shot him.
At the scene, he passed away. After the assault, the men got back into the vehicle and drove away.
