Reiterating the close bilateral connections between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, Secretary of State Marco Rubio talked with Prime Minister Stuart Young highlighting common interests in regional energy security and economic collaboration. Secretary Rubio acknowledged that the economy and development of Trinidad and Tobago depend on energy security.
The results of the sanctions imposed on Venezuela and the Maduro dictatorship are not representative of our relationship with Trinidad and Tobago or the importance we attach to it. The Secretary acknowledged Young’s successful leadership in this field as well as the strategic significance of Trinidad and Tobago’s energy projects.

We will work closely to develop a solution that meets U.S. goals on Venezuela without hurting Trinidad and Tobago, all parties agreed. He applauded Prime Minister Young’s investigation of workable solutions that meet the nation’s energy requirements while adhering to the US sanctions policy.
Prime Minister Young underlined his government’s ongoing dedication to regional security cooperation and the appropriate development of the energy industry. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed US support for long-term stability and democratic government throughout the Caribbean.
