Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – In a narrow and decisive vote, Arima Member of Parliament (MP) Penelope Beckles-Robinson has been nominated as the new Leader of the Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago, following internal deliberations by the People’s National Movement (PNM). The appointment comes amid significant leadership changes within the party, including the resignation of Prime Minister Stuart Young and Deputy Political Leader Rohan Sinanan.
Beckles-Robinson secured her nomination through a closely split 7-6 vote by the PNM’s 13 elected Members of Parliament, including her own vote. The decision was made during a General Council meeting of the party held on April 30, where discussions focused on selecting a successor to lead the opposition in Parliament.

According to internal party sources, a document circulated during the meeting detailed the names and signatures of the MPs who supported Beckles-Robinson’s appointment. Among her supporters were Colm Imbert, Kareem Marcelle, Symon de Nobriga, Marvin Gonzales, Keith Scotland, and Nyan Gadsby-Dolly. Beckles-Robinson also signed in favor of her own nomination.
In contrast, six MPs withheld their support. These included outgoing Prime Minister and party chairman Stuart Young, as well as Brian Manning, Hans Des Vignes, Dominic Romain, Camille Robinson-Regis, and Christian Birchwood. The close margin underscored internal divisions within the party regarding its future leadership.
The leadership reshuffle was further compounded by the resignation of Rohan Sinanan as Deputy Political Leader of the PNM. Sinanan’s resignation, effective May 1, was formally announced on the same day as the Opposition Leader vote. In a statement, Sinanan described his tenure as “a tremendous honour,” expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s growth and mission.
“The decision comes after thoughtful reflection as I continue to balance my responsibilities and focus on other areas of service,” he said. “I am fully committed to the ideals and vision of the PNM and will continue to support the party in its ongoing mission to advance the development of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Beckles-Robinson’s appointment marks a significant moment in the political landscape, as the PNM navigates leadership transitions amid calls for renewal and unity. Her leadership is expected to shape the party’s parliamentary strategy and public engagement in the months ahead.
