Big news for Toronto Carnival! The iconic festival is set to receive $3.5 million in federal funding over the next two years, a game-changing investment announced by the Festival Management Committee (FMC) on Thursday.
The funding, part of Canada’s 2024 Fall Economic Statement released on December 16, marks a major victory after nearly two years of intense advocacy. According to the FMC, this allocation aims to address “systemic underfunding” and recognize the Carnival’s crucial cultural and economic contributions to Canada.

Toronto MPP Dr. Jill Andrew played a key role in this achievement, having called on the province just two months ago to provide emergency funding to save the festival. Back then, she warned that the Carnival’s future was at risk without a multi-year financial commitment.
Now, with the new funding, organizers can focus on long-term sustainability and expanding the festival’s reach. The investment will support capacity-building initiatives, strengthen international marketing efforts, and position the Carnival as a major driver of tourism to Canada.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of our team and the collective support from our stakeholders, the Caribbean community, business leaders, suppliers, and cultural advocates who rallied behind the Carnival,” said Jennifer Hirlehey, Executive Chair of the FMC.
“Together, we have demonstrated the power of unity and a shared vision. This funding will ensure the Carnival remains a dynamic force in Canada’s cultural and economic landscape, inspiring generations to come.”
Formerly known as Caribana, Toronto Carnival was first launched in 1967 as a community-led initiative to celebrate Canada’s Centennial. Inspired by Trinidad’s pre-Lenten Carnival, it has grown into one of the largest Caribbean festivals in North America, attracting millions of attendees annually.
More than just a party, the Carnival is a vibrant showcase of Caribbean culture, music, and artistry. Its economic impact is immense, drawing tourists from around the globe and boosting local businesses.
This federal investment is about more than sustaining the festival—it’s about helping it thrive. By increasing its international visibility and ensuring operational stability, Toronto Carnival is poised to remain a cornerstone of Canada’s cultural and economic landscape for years to come.
With funding secured and the backing of a united community, the future of Toronto Carnival looks brighter than ever. Mark your calendars, because this festival’s next chapter promises to be its most exciting yet!
