Jamaica’s Ambassador to Japan, Shorna-Kay Richards, on Thursday hosted the island’s contingent of athletes and officials in Tokyo as they prepare for the World Athletics Championships. The reception underscored both Jamaica’s sporting excellence and the country’s deepening diplomatic ties with Japan.
Speaking with Observer Online, Ambassador Richards highlighted the dual role of Jamaica’s overseas missions: advancing national interests while providing support for Jamaicans abroad. She explained that one of her priorities has been strengthening the economic and development partnership between Kingston and Tokyo.

“Here in Japan, all our embassies overseas are working to promote and protect Jamaica’s interests while looking after our nationals. Japan is a very important partner, not only in terms of bilateral relations but also as a major source of official development assistance through grants. Strengthening those ties has been a central part of my mission,” she said.
Now in her fifth year as Jamaica’s top envoy in Tokyo, Richards described her tenure as both challenging and rewarding. “For me to have the opportunity to deepen the relationship between our two countries has been a wonderful experience. There are challenges, of course, but I have been able to find creative ways to make my contribution to this important partnership,” she added.
Reflecting on her 31 years of service in Jamaica’s foreign ministry, Richards recalled how her career path shifted from academia to diplomacy. “Next week, on September 14, will mark 31 years since I joined the Foreign Service straight out of university. At first, I thought I would be teaching Spanish literature, but during a career fair at the University of the West Indies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented, and I knew that was where I wanted to serve,” she said.
Her interest in diplomacy was also shaped by Jamaica’s history of international advocacy. “As a student, I took courses in Caribbean and international relations and learned about Jamaica’s role in the anti-apartheid struggle. I was impressed by how a small state like ours could have such a strong voice on global issues like human rights, justice, and development. That inspired me to want to contribute through the Foreign Service,” Richards explained.
The ambassador’s reception brought together Jamaica’s athletes and officials in a symbolic show of unity ahead of the World Championships, while also reinforcing the bond between two nations with long-standing ties in development, trade, and cultural exchange.
