“Lift Me Up,” with music by Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson and lyrics by Tems and Ryan Coogler, is nominated for original song. It is Rihanna’s first Oscar nomination.
Earlier this month, the Barbadian superstar, dressed in a bright red jumpsuit, plowed through 12 of her hits in 13 minutes, at the Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The performance doubled as an announcement to the world that she was pregnant with her second child.
The 95th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be telecast live on ABC and other broadcast networks on March 12.
Lady Gaga, who was nominated for “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick,” is one of the Oscar rivals Rihanna must contend with. The song, which Lady Gaga co-wrote with BloodPop, is her fourth nomination; she and Bradley Cooper won an Oscar for “Shallow” in 2019.
The song “Applause” from “Tell It Like a Woman” earned Diane Warren her 14th Oscar nomination, making her another candidate. During the Governors Awards last year, the prolific songwriter received an honorary Oscar.
MM Keeravaani’s “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR,” which was produced by Chandrabose, and “This is a Life” from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” are also up for the best original song. Ryan Lott, who together with his band Son Lux was also nominated for best original score, co-wrote the later song alongside Mitski, David Byrne, and Ryan.
