Today – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – is a day to remember the work that Dr. King and so many others have done, celebrate what we’ve accomplished and the strength of this community, and to contemplate the work we have ahead and what’s at stake.
It is also one of the biggest moments of the year for The National Action Network. Every year, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by gathering in Washington, D.C. and New York City for our annual brunch and policy forums.

President Joe Biden keynoted our breakfast today in Washington, DC joining Martin Luther King III and his family amongst many other dignitaries in attendance. In Harlem, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, US Attorney for the southern district of New York, Damian Williams, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democratic Minority Leader Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, and others stood at the House of Justice podium with a commitment to uphold the legacy of Dr. King in their daily work. These events are our moment to start the year strong, speaking directly with political and business leaders across the country about NAN’s goals for the year ahead. They are critical to our fight, and you help us make them possible.
As a country, we are at a crossroads on all the things Dr. King stood for. We are debating voting rights. We are debating police reform. We are debating a racial divide that is at a level that in many ways has not been seen since Dr. King was here leading.
The new year brings us to a pivotal moment as national, state, and local governments return to session in a different landscape. In a world where things always seem to be changing, days like today help us stay grounded in our fight against injustice and inequity in every corner of our nation.
But we will not give up. This battle is ours to fight – and it may be an ongoing struggle, and it may be a hard one, but it is not one that we can concede.
Thank you for being part of the fight for justice. Together, we will leave the world a better place than we found it.
