New York, NY—Last night, 17-year-old Yeremi Colino was stabbed and killed in the Financial District. Colino, an immigrant who reportedly lived at the Roosevelt Hotel, and another teen friend were approached by three men who reportedly asked them if they spoke English before attacking them.

“Dangerous, dehumanizing rhetoric leads to violent actions. In 2024, that should be obvious to every elected official in America. It is extremely irresponsible – and downright reprehensible – for the Mayor of New York City to repeatedly, exhaustively and inaccurately degrade immigrant New Yorkers for every problem our City experiences. Mayor Adams must change his tone and approach now. No one should be a victim of violence because of the language that they speak or the color of their skin, especially not a child. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of these two boys. Let’s get back on track to becoming the New York City that is a beacon of hope and opportunity, by honoring and welcoming the people who are coming here for a better life for their families.” (NYIC)
