This innovative program reimagined the traditional student government model to mirror New York City’s local government, introducing elected student roles including Mayor, Public Advocate, and Comptroller. The initiative was designed to make civics education relatable, hands-on, and empowering for students and staff alike.
Led in close collaboration with Meyer Levin Principal Jamie Hendrickson, the program engaged over 140 students in a robust, experiential learning process. Students formed campaign teams, conducted research, developed platforms, practiced public speaking, and learned the fundamentals of governance, accountability, and civic responsibility.
“The goal was to move civics from a textbook concept into a lived experience,” said Khari Edwards of Brooklyn Advisory Group. “By modeling real municipal government, students were able to see themselves as leaders, decision-makers, and active participants in democracy.”
The inauguration ceremony will feature remarks and participation from elected officials and civic leaders who are expected to attend, including:
- Jumaane Williams, New York City Public Advocate
- Mark Levine, New York City Comptroller
- Farah Louis, New York City Council Member (District representing the school)
- Rita Joseph, Chair, New York City Council Committee on Education
- Jahmila Edwards, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, New York City Hall
The event will also include the formal swearing-in of student leaders, reflections on the program’s impact, and recognition of the students’ dedication and leadership throughout the 12-week process.
