Guyanese political leader Rickford Burke, who resides in New York, has received a court summons requiring him to appear before an East Coast Demerara magistrate in the upcoming year.
Burke, the president of the Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) and an opponent of the current administration, received a “defendant summons” at his Brooklyn, New York, home on December 16 from US process server Mark Wesserman and Guyana Police Force (GPF) ASP Rodwell Sarabo.

In a recent news release, GPF announced that Burke must appear in court on March 28, 2024, before the Vigilance Magistrate.
Burke faces several charges, including inciting public fear, sedition, seditious libel, and inciting hatred or ill will based on race.
Burke was the subject of two wanted notices published on December 3, 2021, and September 29, 2022.
On August 28, 2023, accusations were brought against him by the police.
Burke has complained to the New York police in the meantime.
He said that while he was leaving his house to go to church, “two individuals armed with rifles” broke into his house and tried to “push a piece of paper” into his face in a Facebook broadcast.
Burke said he witnessed Wesserman and Sarabo going through his mail.
He claimed he was not served any paperwork, but he did discover it on the steps leading up to his house.
Burke said that by bringing malicious proceedings against him, the government and GPF were trying to misuse the legal system.
