NEW YORK, NY – Acting Chief Administrative Judge Tamiko Amaker announced the appointment of Hon. Wavny Toussaint as Presiding Justice of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court, Second Department, in the 2nd, 11th and 13th Judicial Districts–the first woman and first person of color to serve as this bench’s Presiding Justice. The appointment was made after consultation with Hon. Hector LaSalle, Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department. Justice Toussaint replaces Justice Thomas Aliotta, who retired from the bench last month.
“Justice Toussaint is widely admired for her high standards, fairness, integrity and dedication to the pursuit of justice. She brings extensive experience and knowledge to the position of Presiding Justice. I look forward to working with her in her new capacity,” said Judge Amaker.

Justice Toussaint’s judicial career began in 2002 with her election to the New York City Civil Court, where she sat in Kings County. She was designated an Acting Supreme Court Justice in 2010, re-elected to the Civil Court bench in 2013 and elected to the State Supreme Court, Kings County, in 2015. Since January 2020, she has served in the Appellate Term in the 2nd, 11th and 13th Judicial Districts, hearing appeals from the New York City Criminal, Civil and Housing Courts in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
Judge Amaker also announced the appointments of Hon. Lisa Ottley, Hon. Marina Mundy and Hon. Lourdes Ventura as Associate Justices in the Appellate Term’s 2nd , 11th and 13th Judicial Districts; and the appointments of Hon. James McCormack and Hon. Gretchen Walsh as Associate Justices in the Appellate Term’s 9th and 10th Judicial Districts, which hears appeals from the City, County and Justice Courts in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Dutchess Counties, and the District Courts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
