Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr. Terrance Drew reportedly received treatment at the University Hospital of Martinique after suffering a stroke, according to Martinique media reports.
Drew was reportedly admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit on the evening of August 31 after experiencing headaches and nausea. Medical specialists monitored and treated him, with reports indicating that his condition later stabilised and that no lasting effects were expected.

The reported stroke diagnosis has not been officially confirmed by the Government of St Kitts and Nevis or Drew’s medical team. The government initially said that the 49-year-old prime minister had been admitted to Joseph N. France General Hospital on August 30 after experiencing discomfort, nausea and a headache. Doctors subsequently recommended that he travel overseas for specialised evaluation and monitoring.
Drew later confirmed that he had received medical attention in Martinique before travelling to South Florida for further examinations. In a national address on September 3, he said he remained conscious, stable and in good spirits while doctors continued their evaluations. He did not disclose a specific diagnosis.
The Martinique reports said Drew expressed appreciation for the healthcare professionals who treated him. He is also expected to discuss the quality and availability of medical services in Martinique with other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders, highlighting the island’s role in providing specialised healthcare within the region.
Drew’s illness prompted an outpouring of concern from political leaders and citizens across the Caribbean. Opposition Leader Mark Brantley and other regional officials have publicly expressed their wishes for his recovery.
While Drew remains abroad for medical assessments, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley has assumed responsibility for the government’s affairs in his absence. The government has maintained that the country’s business continues without interruption.
The prime minister’s latest update has provided reassurance to citizens as he continues his recovery and medical evaluations. Further information on his condition and return to St Kitts and Nevis is expected to be released as his doctors complete their assessments.
