New York, NY – As keepers of a culture grounded in artistic expression and national pride, the officers and members of J’Ouvert City International Inc on March 31st, 2023, held their annual J’Ouvert Impact Awards ceremony to honor the 2022 Labor Day winners. The ceremony took place in Brooklyn at Bsmt Brooklyn Canvas located at 1010 E92nd Street, Brooklyn.
The kick off of the awards show was opened by pianist Patrick Davis who played the National Anthem and closed out with the Black America Anthem. The event was sponsored by several community partners to name a few; Patriot Agency, Allan Bakery, Little Mo Wine & Spirits, Attorney Brian Figeroux and Associates, Sovereign Brands, Czen Restaurant and Auntie Wendy Food Catering.

The Mayor of New York City, the Honorable Eric Adams shared a brief moment of appreciation for Yvette Rennie, President J’Ouvert City International Inc and expressed his love and support for the Caribbean culture. Several honorees received citations and certificates from elected officials; Congress member Yvette Clarke, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, Assembly member Monique Chandler-Waterman, City Council members Farah Louis, Rita Joseph, Crystal Hudson.
The categories honored were, Steelband Orchestras, Rhythm section, and Masquerades bands. The participating bands were Philly Pan Stars, Hearts Of Steel, Harmony Music Makers, and Pan Rebels. Everyone was acknowledged for their efforts and impact on J’Ouvert celebration, included were photographers, judges, cultural ambassadors and steelband arrangers.
J’Ouvert City has existed for over 39 years in Brooklyn, New York. The organization was founded upon the principles of educating the community on Caribbean culture and heritage.
J’Ouvert is known to be the kick-off of the Labor Day parade, it showcases the art of steelpan, masquerade customs, and Mas bands. The celebrations were dormant due to Covid, but two years later, the J’Ouvert celebration is back in Brooklyn.
