The growing instability in Haiti is one of the main topics on the agenda for UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ two-day working visit to Jamaica. The island welcomed Guterres on Sunday afternoon.
According to a statement from Jamaica House, Prime Minister Holness, and the secretary general would speak bilaterally about a number of topics, including how to collaborate with the international community and Jamaica’s leadership position in resolving the situation in Haiti.

The effect of the Caribbean climate crisis and the planned midterm review of the international framework for disaster risk mitigation will also be topics of discussion between the two presidents.
The statement noted, “Jamaica’s leadership in efforts to reform the global financial architecture so that developing countries including middle-income countries can restructure and sustainably manage debt as well as to technology and finance at affordable rates to invest in growth inclusive sustainable development will also be on the agenda.”
PM Holness remarked: “We are pleased that the Secretary-General will visit at the pivotal juncture. I look forward to the engagements and fruitful discussion on critical matters in which Jamaica stands ready to be a critical partner.”
The Secretary General’s approach to financing for development in the COVID-19 and beyond is co-convened by Jamaica and Canada, who are also co-chairs of the Group of Friends of SDG Financing.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Holness, and Guterres will only be available for pictures with the media today at Holness’ Devon Road offices at 11 a.m.
