Kingston, Jamaica — Jamaica is preparing to formally petition King Charles III, the island’s de facto head of state, to address the issue of reparations for slavery.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, during her presentation in the 2025/26 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.

“We are taking our demand for reparations from the United Kingdom for the enslavement of our African ancestors into another phase,” Grange told Parliament.
She revealed that the government’s petition will ask the King to refer three specific questions to the Privy Council, Britain’s highest advisory body, concerning reparations. Grange emphasized that this represents a legal strategy that complements, rather than conflicts with, the ongoing political and diplomatic approaches to reparations.
While details of the three questions were not disclosed during her address, Grange said the petition marks a significant step in advancing Jamaica’s pursuit of reparatory justice from the United Kingdom.
The move signals Jamaica’s deepening commitment to securing formal acknowledgment and compensation for the historical injustices of slavery.
