Jamaica’s next general election will take place no later than September, according to Dr. Horace Chang, General Secretary of the ruling Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). His announcement, made at a party appreciation function on Sunday, has set the stage for an intensified political campaign season across the island.
Speaking to JLP supporters in St. James Southern, Dr. Chang urged party workers to begin mobilizing immediately, emphasizing discipline, strategy, and early preparation.

“We can’t go beyond September, so make sure between now and the middle of August… find your friends and line them up now,” Chang told attendees. “Make sure you line them up for election day morning.”
Dr. Chang, who also serves as Member of Parliament for St. James Northwestern, assured the gathering that the government would act responsibly and in accordance with the country’s electoral laws. While no official election date has been declared by the Prime Minister, the declaration by the party’s general secretary signals that the campaign machinery is now fully engaged.
Sunday’s event, hosted by Homer Davis, Member of Parliament for St. James Southern, was held in appreciation of grassroots party workers. Davis is set to defend his seat in the upcoming election and will face a challenge from Nekeisha Burchell of the opposition People’s National Party (PNP).
With both major parties now expected to intensify ground operations, Jamaica appears headed toward a high-stakes summer showdown at the polls, with key battleground constituencies likely to determine the final outcome.
