To promote conversations about the potential effects of recent changes in US policy on the Caribbean, Caribbean leaders have called for top US officials to travel there. His visit concurs with their requests.
Those anticipated to attend the conference on Wednesday include Stewart Young, the recently appointed prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago; Fritz Alphonse Jean, the chairman of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council; and Mia Mottley, the prime minister of Barbados and current Chair of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).
Mottley has also scheduled an urgent virtual conference for Friday to consider the possible consequences of a proposed Trump administration increase in port fees for ships with ties to China that are traveling to the United States, according to reports from the Miami Herald.
