The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Kamina Johnson Smith has dismissed reports circulating in the media that a new consul general has been appointed to lead Jamaica’s Consulate General in New York following the death of Alsion Marie Wilson.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, the ministry said it was “moved to clarify” misinformation regarding the temporary arrangements put in place to ensure smooth operations at the mission.

According to the release, no new consul general has been appointed. Instead, the government has assigned Mrs. Ariel Bowen, Acting Under-Secretary for Diaspora, Consular and Protocol Affairs, to serve as Officer-in-Charge at the Consulate General in New York.
Her deployment, the ministry explained, is intended to maintain continuity of services “while the Government proceeds, at the appropriate time, with the established process for appointing a new Consul-General.”
Wilson, who served in the post for nearly six years, died earlier this month at age 64 after a four-year battle with breast cancer. Her passing prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the Diaspora community she served.
