Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness is calling on Jamaicans to embrace a renewed sense of national responsibility as the country celebrates its 64th anniversary of Independence, urging citizens to work together to build a stronger, safer and more resilient nation for future generations.
In his Independence Day message, Holness said Jamaica’s freedom is more than a historic achievement, it is an ongoing responsibility that every generation must uphold by preserving the nation’s progress and strengthening its institutions.

“Today we celebrate our Independence. We honour the courage and the sacrifice that carried us here. And we remember that independence is not a single moment in history. It is a responsibility, renewed by every generation.”
Reflecting on the country’s recovery following Hurricane Melissa, the Prime Minister praised the resilience shown by Jamaicans, highlighting the efforts of emergency personnel, public servants, volunteers, churches, businesses and ordinary citizens who came together to support affected communities. He said the experience demonstrated the strength of national unity during times of crisis.
Holness also emphasized the importance of rebuilding Jamaica to better withstand future disasters. He pointed to the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) as a key institution that will coordinate reconstruction efforts, improve infrastructure and ensure public resources are used efficiently and transparently.
The Prime Minister encouraged Jamaicans both at home and abroad to continue contributing to the country’s development by promoting productivity, innovation and civic responsibility. He said every citizen has a role to play in creating a more secure and prosperous future.
“It is our duty to preserve what those before us built, to strengthen what has been weakened, and to leave to our children a Jamaica more secure, more productive, and more hopeful than the one we inherited.”
Holness also celebrated Jamaica’s global achievements, noting that the country’s influence extends far beyond its size through the accomplishments of its athletes, musicians, entrepreneurs, educators, healthcare professionals and members of the Diaspora. He said these successes reflect the determination and resilience that continue to define the Jamaican people.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister challenged Jamaicans to make the most of the opportunities before them and to work collectively toward national progress.
“Let this generation be remembered as the generation that secured Jamaica’s future.”
This year’s Independence celebrations are being observed under the national theme “United in Celebrating Resilience,” with leaders across the country calling on Jamaicans to draw strength from their shared history while continuing to build a united and resilient nation.
