British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the latest honours celebrate individuals who place service above self and work to strengthen communities and improve lives across the country. He noted that the recipients reflect the compassion, dedication and decency that the United Kingdom prides itself on.
Elba was knighted for his services to young people. The internationally acclaimed actor, who had previously received an MBE, is now entitled to use the title Sir. He has built a distinguished career with memorable roles in television and film, including appearances in The Wire, Luther, and A House of Dynamite.
Beyond his acting career, Elba has been widely recognized for his humanitarian and advocacy work. Through the Elba Hope Foundation, he has supported initiatives focused on education, community empowerment and sustainable development. He has also been a prominent campaigner against knife crime in the United Kingdom and earlier this year appeared in a documentary alongside King Charles III and the prime minister addressing social issues affecting young people.
Cynthia Erivo received her MBE for services to music and drama. Over the past decade, she has emerged as one of the most influential performers to come out of the United Kingdom, earning international acclaim for her work on stage and screen.
Erivo starred in The Color Purple on Broadway and has delivered powerful performances in films such as Harriet and the Wicked movie franchise. She is also one award away from achieving EGOT status, having already won an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony Award.
Reacting to the honor, Erivo said receiving an MBE was an experience she never imagined would happen and described it as a deeply meaningful recognition of her work.
The inclusion of both Elba and Erivo in the New Year’s Honours List underscores the continued global impact of British talent in film, music and theatre, as well as the role artists can play in advancing social causes alongside their creative achievements.
