For two Saturdays in June, Harlem hosted a celebration of the cultures that make up New York City. The 17th Annual NYC Multicultural Festival ran under the theme “Celebrate Diversity, Celebrate You.” It opened on June 6 at the Jackie Robinson Park Bandshell and closed on June 20 with a block-long gathering on St. Nicholas Avenue between 141st and 145th Streets. Admission was free.

Two stages kept the music going all day. Dance troupes from around the world, live musicians and cultural showcases performed one after another. The New York African Chorus Ensemble, which also presents the festival, was among the performers. Between sets, visitors browsed international food vendors, artisan crafts and retail booths. Families took part in hands-on community workshops and kid-friendly programming.
The day started with the Unity Circle, where neighbors and visitors stood together for their ancestors, their families and the city they share. That moment reflects why the festival exists. It began as a way to reduce hate crimes and strengthen ties between police and the community, and it is co-presented with the NYPD’s 30th Precinct.
City Council Member Gale Brewer was in attendance. Seventeen years in, the festival still makes a simple case: a neighborhood is stronger when everyone gets to bring their culture to the street.
