Garry Conille, tasked with restoring order in Haiti, arrived on Saturday to assume his new role as prime minister.
Conille has been UNICEF’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023. He is no stranger to Haiti’s politics having previously served as Haiti’s prime minister from October 2011 to May 2012 under then-President Michel Martelly.

A transitional council, aiming to facilitate upcoming elections in Haiti, appointed Conille earlier this week. He succeeds interim prime minister Michel Patrick Boisvert, with whom he met upon his arrival in the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to a government statement.
As Conille steps into his new position, gang violence continues to escalate in parts of Haiti’s capital and beyond. The country is currently awaiting the U.N.-backed deployment of a police force from Kenya and other nations.
