Famous Haitian rum has recently fallen prey to violent gangs fighting for control of more and more companies and land in the unstable Caribbean country.
According to a statement from the firm, opposing gangs engaged in fighting close to the Rhum Barbancourt distillery in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, resulting in the burning of at least eight hectares (19.8 acres) of sugarcane fields.

The source of rum is from the delicious sugarcane plant. A large mass of land would have burnt, although Barbancourt officials emphasized that the loss of those fields would not have an impact on output.
In an effort to safeguard the well-being of its workers, the company’s foundation announced that it would temporarily cease supplying free drinking water, health services, and the use of basketball and football grounds.
Rum from Haiti is regarded as one of its most well-liked exports.
According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, there were over 800 homicides, injuries, or kidnappings in Haiti in January—more than three times as many as in the same month in 2023. According to him, another 300 gang members are thought to have died or been wounded last month.
He claimed that the severity of gang fights lately, which may sometimes go on for many hours, “may indicate that some gangs have recently received new ammunition.”
Haiti is also getting over a recent wave of violent protests calling for Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation.
According to Türk, throughout the protests, at least 16 individuals lost their lives and around 30 others were hurt, most of them in altercations with the police. Gang violence persists in the interim.
