Guyana supported a US-sponsored resolution in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on February 24, 2025, However, the nation’s decision did not denounce Russia’s involvement in the invasion of Ukraine.
Given the ongoing Venezuelan conflict on the Western boundary and worries that Georgetown is attempting to gain favor with Washington, Guyana’s decision at the most significant UN meeting will draw criticism.

Aiming for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, US President Donald Trump’s resolution adopts a neutral stance on the issue.
Trump contradicted a long-standing US stance on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as seen by the brief resolution. Majority of the votes were cast in favor of the US resolution at 66.67%, to exact 10 to 15 members of the UN Security Council. The countries voted in favor are, The United States, China, Russia, Guyana, Algeria, Pakistan, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Somalia. Five European nations—Britain, France, Slovenia, Denmark, and Greece—did not participate.
Due to Russia’s veto as a permanent member, the UNSC has not taken any meaningful action on the conflict in Ukraine.
Guyana supported two conflicting resolutions at the UN General Assembly earlier in the day. One, supported by the US, demanded peace, while the other, supported by Kyiv and European nations, reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
“The Path to Peace,” a resolution sponsored by the United States, sought to advance a diplomatic settlement to the conflict. A yes vote was eventually delivered in favor of the final modified resolution, which was accepted with 93 votes in favor, 8 against, and 73 abstentions, notwithstanding Guyana’s initial abstention from voting on an amendment denouncing Russia’s activities.
The US motion was supported by Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad; Antigua and Grenada abstained, and the Bahamas and Dominica did not cast ballots.
Guyana also backed the resolution “Advancing a Comprehensive, Just, and Lasting Peace in Ukraine,” which was pro-Ukraine. This resolution recognized Ukraine’s sovereignty and demanded that Russian military leave the country immediately. With 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstentions, it was approved.
The CARICOM countries of Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, and The Bahamas all supported the resolution titled “Advancing a Comprehensive, Just, and Lasting Peace in Ukraine.” Saint Vincent and the Grenadines did not vote, while Haiti did not cast a ballot.
