On October 19, 2024, the University of Guyana stated that every attempt was being made to meet its operating expenses and have thousands of students graduate the following month.
Following the government’s announcement of free university tuition, the publicly-owned postsecondary educational institution stated that “some conditions” pertaining to students and other interpretations needed to be addressed immediately.

“The relevant departments of the University and the Government of Guyana are diligently addressing some of these issues regarding implementation mechanisms and the payment of fees owing to the University by prospective graduates and continuing students.
UG noted in a released statement, “This is so that all eligible students can graduate on time and the operations of the University for which fees have always been needed can continue uninterrupted until January 2025 when this first semester officially ends.”
UG stated that students must pay their outstanding tuition payments, but they applauded the government’s plan to assume responsibility for high-quality tuition-free education starting in January 2025. “Revenue from fees cover more than 50% of the University of Guyana’s operating expenses and is always desperately needed towards the end of the year,” UG said.
The statement explained, “The University of Guyana, therefore, wishes to assure its stakeholders that all possible avenues are being pursued to ensure the operations and best interests of everyone, most importantly those of our 3500 prospective graduates are satisfied in the coming week.”
This year’s graduation is scheduled for November 7–11 and November 17, 2024.
According to UG, it has expanded over the last four years by permitting thousands of students to enroll and successfully graduate without paying all tuition costs, supporting the Government of Guyana’s kind of free tuition. UG added that the same university that has supported them for so long could not routinely refuse to allow students to graduate when their graduations are already scheduled.
UG, which is currently in its 60th year, was established in October 1963 and currently provides more than 160 programs in more than 60 disciplines in blended, online, and in-person forms.
UG operates eight campuses under a system headquartered in Guyana. With more than 10,000 students, it is the biggest, oldest, most cutting-edge, and sole public university in Guyana.
Throughout its 60-year existence, UG has trained, educated, and conducted research for more than 50,000 graduates. In more than 150 different fields, its alumni have climbed to the top of prestigious national, regional, and international organizations.
