President Irfaan Ali recently met with US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer over the phone on the region’s safety and security as well as strategies to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly the US’s “unwavering support for Guyana’s sovereignty”.
This is in line with a reading that the White House released yesterday. The reference to sovereignty is seen as noteworthy in light of Venezuela’s recent aggressive actions toward Guyana and the likelihood that Washington would reinstate oil sanctions on Caracas.

Finer praised Guyana’s leadership as the current Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), according to the readout from the call. To assist Haitians in restoring security and paving the way for free and fair elections, Finer and Ali both emphasized the critical need for the international community to step up its support for initiatives led by the country’s citizens and the Multinational Security Support endeavor. Climate change and energy security were among their other common concerns, according to the readout.
