Grenadian graduate Javid Mitchell has received the highest distinction, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Howard University, and with the highest GPA, 4.0, in the College of Engineering and Architecture and the Computer Science Department.
Mitchell attended TA Marryshow Community College earning an Associate’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering before heading to Howard University.

His success, however, did not come without financial hurdles on his almost four-year journey. As many international students do, he lived with family and traveled 4 hours everyday to classes and back.
Mitchell describes himself as a “hardworking, self-motivated individual with the goal of making a meaningful impact in the world through Science and Technology”. He previously worked in the Electrical industry as a Project Manager where he gained years of experience in the field of Renewable Energy.
The focused student from Saint George, New Hampshire, took 20 credits each semester to finish ahead of his class in three and a half years.
Hard work, long travel hours, scholarships and mentorship kept him steadfast towards his goal.
He interned at Spice Island Beach Resort, and started working for KCIC Consulting in Washington DC.
He is looking to pursue a Master’s in Sustainable Engineering at Columbia University next.
The 2023 Howard University alumnus advises young people to “be determined, resilient, and positive” to achieve their goals despite probable hurdles.
