From a New Orleans homeless shelter to the top of his high school class, Elijah Hogan, 19, has overcome incredible challenges in his young life.
Hogan recently graduated as one of the valedictorians at Walter L. Cohen College Prep, despite spending over a year living in a homeless shelter for youth.

At just 8 years old, Hogan lost his mother and later moved in with his grandmother. Before his senior year of high school, he found himself at Covenant House, a shelter for homeless youth.
Despite these hardships, Hogan persevered and graduated with a 3.93 GPA. During his valedictory speech at the graduation ceremony, he praised his classmates for their determination, especially given that they began high school during the pandemic.
“Above all the trials, tests, and hardships, what led us here is that we all set a goal to reach,” Hogan said. “Take pride in how far you have come. Have faith in how far you can go. But don’t forget to enjoy your journey.”
He also described his speech as a “thank-you note” to the community that supported him.
Jerel Bryant, CEO of Collegiate Academies, which operates the high school, attributed Hogan’s success to his strong character.
Jarkayla Cobb, Hogan’s case worker at Covenant House, recalled how shy Hogan was when he first arrived at the shelter.
Hogan now plans to attend Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, where he will receive some tuition assistance while pursuing a degree in graphic design.
He managed to raise almost $95,000 via GoFundMe in his fight for education and stability. He encouraged other students facing hardships to stay focused on their education.
